i wake to her hoot
& the flapping of her wings
a new bird on my windowsill
spilling the dawn across the drapes
it is a new day to be pregnant
with hopes
forget the holes at home
forget the sighs at pauper’s meal
forget the scornful eyes
following those momentary morsels
forget the rushing feet
that halt in the homestretch
where the bullets leave behind
orphans who turn harmless twigs
into make-believe pistols
& parents who turn photos into
a dictionary of grief
